Travel To The Dominican Republic – FAQ's

What travel documents do I need to travel to the Dominican Republic?
A passport or equivalent national identity document and a visa is required of foreigners traveling to the Dominican Republic. Citizens of some countries, listed below, do not need a visa. All non-resident travelers need to show a round trip ticket as proof of their departure.
You will need a passport.
A passport is the document for international travel to the Dominican Republic. In these days of enhanced security considerations, travelers are highly recommended to go abroad with passports as their identification document. Note you will need a passport to cash traveler's checks, rent a car, to make large credit card purchases, and sometimes even as a security deposit for equipment such as golf clubs. Carry your passport when you go into the city, in case you want to make a large credit card purchase or change a travelers check. Otherwise keep it locked in your safe and carry the Xerox copy. If you do carry your passport on your travels, it is always a good practice to keep a copy of it in a safe place. This will expedite replacement should it get lost.
What currency should I bring to the Dominican Republic?
US Dollars is the most easily exchangeable foreign currency in the Dominican Republic. The Euro comes a close second. The reason is that the exchange rate for US Dollars is extremely competitive here, making it a good transition currency. Other currencies can be exchanged, but usually a lower rate will be paid than if you had first exchanged your currency in US Dollar. Bring a mix of credit cards, ATM cards and travelers checks. Exchange houses pay the most for US Dollar travel checks. Next comes the US Dollar, Canadian, and the Euro.
Which are the nearest airports to your villas on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic?
The nearest airport to our luxury rental villas in the Dominican Republic is Puerto Plata International Airport (POP). If you cannot find a flight into Puerto Plata International Airport, a second alternative is Santiago International Airport. (STI)
What do I do upon arrival at the airport in Puerto Plata?
Upon arrival, you will be required to have all your custom and immigration forms completed and ready for inspection. You will also be required to purchase a Tourist Card for the Dominican Republic. Once you complete your forms and pass through the Customs & Immigration area, you will enter the luggage pickup area. Get your luggage and proceed outside the terminal building. Look for a transportation host with your "Name Sign" or someone wearing a Caribbean Vacation Properties T-Shirt. You will be taken directly to your rental villa.
How do I rent a car in the Dominican Republic?
We strongly suggest arranging a rental car prior to arrival to the Dominican Republic. There are several mayor rental companies such as Hertz, Alamo, Avis, etc, located at the Puerto Plata airport terminal. If you cannot reserve a car in advance or would like to have us do it for you, our travel host will be happy to assist you in securing a car prior to your arrival in the Dominican Republic. We can also arrange for a private car & driver, or taxi airport pick up.
How much should I expect to pay in taxi fare in the Dominican Republic?
Taxi fares at the airport are posted and regulated by the Ministry of Tourism. This, however, applyes only to taxis with permits and not to private drivers. You will want to make sure to get a taxi with a "Taxi de Turismo" logo on the side of the door. Most are air conditioned vans.
What options do I have if I'm traveling with a large family to the Dominican Republic?
Our Concierge can arrange a mini-bus for up to 25 people. They can also arrange multiple vans, taxis or even a private airplane charter.
How do I get from the airport to my villa rental?
You have several options: (1) we can arrange roundtrip transfers with our own VIP Airport Transfer Service. (2) You can take a local taxi. (3) You can rent a car at the airport.
